The Tasting Australia Flotilla invites you to explore the beauty of the mighty Murray River in the company of fellow adventurers while enjoying outstanding South Australian food and drink.

A three-day itinerary awaits – the historic charm of the iconic paddle steamer PS Marion will capture you from the moment you step foot on the dock at Mannum.

As the world’s only operational, heritage, steam driven, wood fired overnight passenger paddle steamer, travelling on the PS Marion is an experience like no other.

From the army of volunteers that keep her going to the captain’s quarters where you can have a turn at steering the steamer, the PS Marion is a marvel of modern-day history.

The Marion was built in 1896 and served its early days as a hawking vessel – a David Jones of the river – selling garments to residents up and down the Murray, delivering their bespoke pieces weeks after they were ordered. She also transported wheat and hay for a time before becoming one of the premier passenger carriers of the river.

After a period of being decommissioned, the Marion was brought back to life under the ownership of the Mid Murray Council with a full restoration in 1989. Today the Marion boasts 1940s charm, 150 volunteer captains and crew, and a long list of present-day admirers.

Guests will board the Marion on Friday, settling in for a leisurely weekend of grazing, star gazing and sight seeing along the magical Murray.

Leading the pass each night will be Tasting Australia patron Cheong Liew and Tasting Australia ambassador Adam Liston (Shōbōsho) – expect exciting dishes with traditional techniques inspired by the region and the vintage environment, including Essie, the wood-fired stove. 

Breakfast, lunch and morning and afternoon tea prepared by the team from Vintner’s Bar and Grill Peter Clarke and front of house manager Rami Heer bring Barossan excellence to the water.

Each day there will be activities on board, including tastings with Tasting Australia’s esteemed family of beverage purveyors, retro games and of course a tour of the Marion in action.

Accommodation is twin share (minimum purchase two people) with shared bathroom facilities.

The Tasting Australia Flotilla is a one-of-a-kind long weekend that brings together the romance of old-world engineering, natural beauty and high quality, contemporary food and drink.
